Artist Statement
I am never disappointed after painting for hours in a field or along the side of a mountain because I feel there has always been a single breathless moment when the world seems to stop, light fills the landscape and the sight before me glistens in a purity beyond words. Plein-Air painting offers me connectivity to the universe. To watch the shadows shift and change in mere moments makes me feel a part of this great circle of life. “Mother Nature never disappoints – even in the early morning mists, the approaching wind storm or blinding blizzard-she puts on quite a show.”
I strive to fill my canvas with such moments as to offer the viewer a rest from the mundane. I travel to both exotic places in the world and immediate localities with canvas in hand interpreting each new landscape. Beauty can be found everywhere if we stop to look-especially where we least expect it.
Education and How I Arrived at Where I Am Today
I earned a Bachelors Degree in Art Education in 1975 from Anna Maria College in Paxton Massachusetts and a Masters Certificate in Museum Administration from JFK University in Orinda in 1992. I only recently began painting after a thirty year hiatus from painting because of professional demands on my time. When my friend Michael Graves, a noteworthy New England plein air artist, came for a visit four summers ago he introduced me to this style of painting that I had never before tried.
The fact that a painting could be completed within a few hours, while experiencing some of the most beautiful sights in the world, was appealing to me. I quickly became hooked as this type of art fit in with my busy lifestyle. What he forgot to mentioned was the bees, mice, snow, snakes, high winds, fog and rain that came along with the territory!
I am constantly seeking new sites. This summer I painted for eight days on Cape Cod Massachusetts. You can catch me painting the local scene most weekends- my favorite sites are Rubidoux Nature Center, Fairmount Park, Temecula Wine Country, Mission San Juan Capistrano. Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach.
